Recently, I’ve taken more of an interest to the cat’s hobbies. One could definitely argue, and with reason, that I have much too time on my plate to do such things. That accusation would be completely true. I am losing my mind, one fragment at a time, waiting for my orientation to begin. My parents aren’t home for the entire month, and that leaves me and Mittens alone, fending for ourselves.
It’s ridiculous to say out loud, isn’t it? “I’m trying to take interest in what the cat finds interesting.” However, after ten straight days of doing so, I’m finding that there is a much better simplicity to be had in human life.
One of the activities Mittens enjoys doing is spending time outdoors. Luckily, despite the normal wintery conditions in New Hampshire, the last couple of days have been between forty to fifty-five, all sunny. This grants the perfect opportunity to walk around the yard, sniffing the smells and chewing on grass and branches. I can proudly say I haven’t fallen so deeply into the pit where I’m eating plants outside, but the walks are enjoyable.
We are blessed to have such a nice backyard, with a flowing stream. Just getting some vitamin D from the sun outside automatically makes a day better. I thank Mittens for pushing me to go outside more, screaming at me if I leave without her.
Another hobby she enjoys is watching birds, mice, and other small rodentia. Her abilities are quite limited, as she’s more of an indoor than outdoor cat nowadays, but she enjoys watching them on the television. To assist her, I have to put the videos on through my end. Sometimes she enjoys watching from the couch, sometimes she feels she needs more of an up-close and personal interaction.
Even though I’m typically doing other things than just watching birds fly around and eat seeds, the sound of chirping is extremely calming. It wouldn’t be a first choice, but I can withstand the sounds while writing or reading a book. The bonus comes through her enjoying what she’s watching, of course. (Example video: Here)
The last hobby, which could be argued isn’t a hobby, is excessive sleeping. I’ve never been a person who enjoys naps, as it disrupts my sleep schedule and I always feel groggy waking up. I do enjoy, however, simply resting. There’s pressure put onto myself (by myself) to constantly be in action, doing something. Mittens, subtly, has taught me that sometimes it’s best to rest and give it a break.
So even though I’ve fallen into somewhat of a daily routine, I still learn more and more everyday. It’s all the more reason to adopt a pet for yourself, as you’ll both learn from the experience. Maybe your cat’s hobbies will be just as engaging as mine.
I’m trying something new today as well, which would be inserting a song into the article just for fun. I’m not entirely sure if the reader can see the link, but if not, say it’s a fun game. Every song will be taken from my Liked Song playlist on Spotify, as a way to promote my Spotify.
